Manuscript Consults

I work with individual short stories, personal essays, novels, memoirs, and short story collections at all stages using a question-based approach.

I sought out Danielle's help while writing my first novel. Danielle offered me great advice and a specific, informative critique which helped me to rethink my work. In addition to great feedback on my writing, she was always quick to respond to my emails and questions and returned my manuscript quickly. This was my first time working with a professional reader and writing coach, and I would absolutely recommend Danielle to any other writers that need additional feedback and pointed critiques of their projects.

Cost: Starts at $400 (up to 8,000 words). Rates are per word above that count. Please inquire for rates for larger projects.

Danielle’s notes were incredibly helpful in moving my stories to the next stage. Her questions are incredibly incisive and thoughtful. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking to identify holes in the narrative, spots for development, unanswered questions, room for more information, and kinks that need to be worked out. I felt her feedback, rather than pushing me toward a certain style or form, helped me identify the story I was looking to tell and moved me toward getting there.

One-on-One Writing Coaching

Working with Danielle has changed my writing life. Not only does she bring with her the knowledge and wisdom of someone who has been writing and deeply thinking about writing for over two decades, but she brings the empathy of those years of experience too. As well as her craft expertise, I have been additionally grateful for her ability to shine light on deeper, longer-term issues that might be holding me back in my work, and to offer methods of successfully moving through those kinds of blocks. The results are real; learning from her is truly a gift that keeps on giving.

Group Coaching
Dates TBD

If you're interested in group coaching, please fill out this short interest survey

This is an intimate group focused on process and support.

Designed for writers looking for accountability and guidance as they move through their work, group coaching offers the support system you need to get your work done — or, often, to get to a place where you can even begin. Whether it’s solving questions of craft and process or clearing aside psychological or practical blocks, these groups are designed to improve not only your work, but your relationship to it in a structured and supportive environment.

During our six weeks together, I'll be your honest, expansive, realistic (yet encouraging!) guide for learning how to integrate writing into your actual life — and how to stay connected to your work in a way that feels meaningful and productive. Together we'll decide on a structure, direction, and set of shared goals based on the interests of the group. Our meeting times will be divided between these agreed-upon topics — such as detailed craft discussions, the realities of publishing, existential questions of the writing life, and stubborn points in process — and a rotating spotlight on an individual group member's particular circumstances and concerns.

Danielle pushes you to think more deeply about your characters, your structure, and all of the elements that make writing work. In particular, she’s given me so many resources on how to revise your work, a process that can be frustrating but with her guidance becomes somehow fun! In a one-on-one setting, she’s patient, encouraging, and ultimately everything she edits or reviews becomes better just from her reading it. Simply talking to Danielle about writing as a craft makes you itch to write, so working with her gives you the tools to turn that itch into action. -Samantha, Coaching Client and Student

After working with Danielle on just two revisions, I transformed a rambling, self-conscious, and avoidant first draft into a clear, concise, and authentic personal statement for my MFA applications. By poking and probing, suggesting areas of clarification, specification, or simplification, Danielle helped me identify what it was I really wanted to say. In some ways, it was a reflective coaching session in disguise. Danielle's questions led me to greater clarity on my intentions for an MFA.

Danielle’s expertise helped me produce a polished MFA application. Her feedback guided me toward a cohesive portfolio in which each piece (each statement and story) accentuated the strengths of the others. I was most impressed by Danielle’s incisive editorial notes, which were not only specific to my stories but also so illuminating that they helped improve my writing overall. To me, every piece of feedback from Danielle—whether it was about a story, a character, a personal statement, or the MFA application process overall—was elucidative in a spectacular way. I highly recommend working with Danielle!
